Can Finland’s approach to deeptech ethics end AI’s societal damage?

Episode Summary

In this short episode, I’m sharing my frustration over the lack of action in digital ethics and AI innovation over the years. But, it is also a big announcement!

For those who’ve been following me on LinkedIn and my listeners/members of The CEO Retort podcast, I’ve been alluding to plans and ideas of relocating my AI business and research interests to the EU and that I have been building bridges.

Well, I’m happy to announce that we have decided to establish our HQ in Helsinki, Finland – The country that has consistently demonstrated what ethics and responsible innovation look like.

Above all, they have invested heavily in ensuring their citizens are well looked after. I recommend you read the insightful article published in Forbes by Jessica Mendoza in March 2025 discussing the program and why Finland is the place to monitor for exciting innovations – FYI, I’m one of the 15 innovators mentioned in the report, which is insane 😆

Of course, no country is 100% perfect or without issues. But I’m ashamed to say that if you were to compare the UK’s attitude towards ethics and prioritising people, we are far behind.

We had the opportunity to lead, not just in AI but in ethical innovation. We were in the right place for it at the Google Campus London ecosystem. But then Brexit happened, and VCs told me directly that ethics is “bullshit” or “an obstacle” etc 🙄

And, today, despite having a government that is more aligned with my progressive beliefs, they are still aligning the UK closer to Trump’s Silicon Valley than the EU.

As a result, and unlike Finland, we are certainly not the happiest country in the world. I said it before, and I will say it again. I’m not waiting for anyone anymore to make a change.

I will make the change, and I am thankful to Finland for giving me the opportunity to build this change within their thriving deeptech ecosystem. Starting mid-August, I’ll work and live for a few weeks in Helsinki, together with my fellow participants and Helsinki Partners.

Through the program, I expect to further explore opportunities for Nebuli and other upcoming projects (TBC) and build my Nordic network and, dare I say it, influence 😬

I’m also announcing that I will produce a series with The CEO Retort podcast documenting my journey in Finland, but, above all, showing the world what ethics look like in practice, beyond talk and speeches. I’ve been calling out the lack of ethics in the world of tech, and now I want to take this opportunity to show you the benefits of ethics in innovation.
