Trump says ‘a whole civilisation will die tonight’ if Iran does not make a deal. Has he crossed the genocide line?
This is the day the so-called “leader of the free world” has officially replaced diplomacy with a Truth Social post that reads like a rejected script from a 1980s B-movie. Donald Trump’s latest outburst, stating “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if Iran doesn’t “make a deal,” is the final proof that the United States is being governed by a man who thinks the Geneva Convention is a hotel in Switzerland.
Here is his full “Truth” statement:
“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”
OK, let’s get serious and cut through the “strongman” theatrics and look at the legal reality. Has he crossed the line into international criminality?
The short answer, based on our analysis of the legal text, is yes. However, I will be inviting legal experts to discuss this further on The CEO Retort Podcast, regardless of what happens tonight (at the time of this writing).
Public Incitement to Genocide (Article III, Genocide Convention)
Under the 1948 Genocide Convention (Article III, c), “direct and public incitement to commit genocide” is a punishable act, regardless of whether the genocide actually takes place.
Let’s bust the typical excuse. Trump is not threatening a military base, he is threatening a “civilization,” as he put it. In legal terms, that is a protected group. To state that a “whole civilization will die” is a clear, unambiguous signal of intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national or ethnic group.
The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) convicted “journalists” for far less during the Media Case. Trump has 80 million “followers” on Truth Social. This is not a mere “tweet,” it is a digital broadcast of intent to exterminate.
Terrorising a Civilian Population (Geneva Convention Protocol I)
Even if he step back from his threats, Trump has officially violated Article 51(2) of Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions, which states: “Acts or threats of violence the primary purpose of which is to spread terror among the civilian population are prohibited.”
By setting a time-bound deadline of 20:00 Washington DC time on Tuesday (00:00 GMT on Wednesday), he is intentionally inflicting mass psychological trauma on over 90 million people. In a court of law, this is categorised as a war crime.
You cannot use the threat of total annihilation as a “negotiating tactic.” That is not “The Art of the Deal,” as per his supporters. This is the playbook of a terrorist.
It is also important to remember that if Trump actually attempts to follow through on this threat, he will be doing so without the support of the Joint Chiefs, who understand that “eradicating a civilisation” is a logistical and legal impossibility that would trigger global catastrophic outcomes for U.S. alliances, as I have discussed recently with Professor Scott Lucas.
As we monitor this situation, I have a simple question on my mind for American “opposition” figures, whoever they are. By threatening the death of a civilisation, Trump has officially transitioned from what his supporters and bro-sphere podcasters describe as a “disruptive politician” to a legal liability for the entire U.S. nation. What are they going to do about it now?
Cognitively speaking, and while I am a biomedical scientist by trade, I am not an expert in this area, but Trump is behaving like the toddler with the remote control to a nuclear silo, and he is pressing every button to see which one makes the loudest noise.
My message is simple: if you are still supporting this behaviour or excusing it as “Trump’s strong leadership,” you are not just technically illiterate, you are a cheerleader for a war crime.
After the global failure in dealing with the Gaza genocide, tonight will be the final test for the West to decide if it has any shred of legal integrity left and suppress white supremacy, racism and Islamophobia, which underpin the far-right’s policies.
